The start of a school year brings new routines and exciting discoveries. After a summer filled with fun and connection at the Library, we’re here to help families ease back into the rhythm of academic life.
Josée, OPL’s Children Program & Public Service Assistant, shares some tips for making the most of the Library’s tools, resources, spaces, and activities to support learning, well-being and success throughout the school year.
Read for fun: “If we can let kids gravitate toward the books they are naturally drawn to, they will become lifelong readers,” recommends Josée. Reading for pleasure is pivotal to children’s learning and academic development. Make regular visits to your local OPL branch to browse and borrow books for all ages and interests for a fun family activity.
Vary the studying environment: The Library offers a variety of calm and welcoming spaces where children can read or study as part of their regular routine. This also gives them access to a wide range of books, research materials, and learning resources.
Get expert help: Librarians are available to answer questions, help children find specific books, research material, or useful resources. Many OPL branches also offer homework help. When children have assignments or projects to complete, they can visit a branch to access valuable support from knowledgeable librarians and helpful volunteers.
Support wellbeing and emotional health: A new school year can sometimes be challenging for children as they adjust to new routines. “Cultivating mindfulness and a sense of calm and communicating consciously with your children is very beneficial during this stressful and busy season,” advises Josée. OPL offers a wide collection of books, magazines, and online resources that can help families explore topics such as social and emotional learning, stress management, school-related social dynamics, and much more.
Spark curiosity: As families navigate the back-to-school transition, it's important to make space for activities that nurture curiosity, creativity and exploration. All-year-long, the library offers a wide range of free resources as well as educational and recreational programs that encourages children to explore new interests, develop their talents, creativity, and imagination, and build meaningful connections.
