Ottawa Public Library (OPL) is excited to announce a new partnership with Lire et Faire Lire Ontario (LEFL), a volunteer-run organisation that aims to promote the joy of reading in French to children, create intergenerational links between children and adults aged 50+ and to support the vitality of francophone communities in Ottawa.

Lire et Faire Lire recruits francophone volunteers to engage in a planned series of weekly visits to schools. Each volunteer visits with a small group of children who are learning to read, under the supervision of the teacher. The group reads aloud together in French, finding enjoyment in discovering new books and exploring their interests. The intergenerational nature of the connections allows all participants to learn and grow in community, at a moment in time when families are more geographically spread out than ever.

Ottawa Public Library supports LEFL volunteers and organizers with presentations on early literacy, reading aloud, and our French collections for children. Volunteers are invited to borrow from our collections for their school visits and speak with the children about what they can find at the library. OPL is excited to partner with a literacy-based organization that is enthusiastic about promoting our diverse collections and resources to school-aged children and their families.

LEFL are currently looking for volunteers to join their program! If you are interested in joining, please visit their website to fill out the volunteer application form.
